Into the shadows of Kings Wood: a Halloween night hike

Join us on Saturday 31st October for a special Halloween night hike through the ancient woodland of Kings Wood, Challock. Starting from Kings Wood Car Park at 6:00pm, this atmospheric evening walk invites you to step into one of Kent’s historic royal hunting grounds as darkness begins to fall.
This walk is part of our long-running series of night hikes in Kings Wood, which we’ve been leading for over five years. Each event has proven incredibly popular, and this Halloween edition adds an extra layer of atmosphere as we explore the woodland under the cover of night.
Setting off from the car park, you’ll be welcomed with a hot drink before we head out along woodland tracks and quiet forest paths. As we move deeper into the woods, there’s a chance we may encounter the resident herds of fallow deer, often seen moving silently between the trees at dusk.
The route covers approximately six miles at a steady, sociable pace, looping through the heart of the woodland before returning to the starting point. This walk is perfect for those who enjoy a unique outdoor experience, combining nature, history, and a hint of Halloween atmosphere.

Kings Wood has a long and fascinating history as a former royal hunting forest, and even today it retains a sense of scale and mystery, especially after sunset. As daylight fades, the woodland takes on a completely different character, with sounds, shadows, and shifting light adding to the experience of walking through this historic landscape.
We begin at Kings Wood Car Park, where you’ll be greeted with a warm drink before setting off. From here, the route follows a network of well-defined woodland tracks and forest paths, guiding us through different sections of the forest. The steady pace allows time to adjust to the low light and take in the surroundings as the evening unfolds.
One of the highlights of walking in Kings Wood is the chance to spot wildlife, particularly the herds of fallow deer that live within the forest. Moving quietly through the trees, they are often most active at dusk, and sightings can add a memorable moment to the walk.
This Halloween edition brings an added sense of atmosphere to the experience. The combination of ancient woodland, fading light, and the seasonal setting creates a subtly eerie backdrop, making this walk feel a little different from our usual night hikes without losing its relaxed and welcoming feel.
The circular route covers around six miles and takes approximately three and a half hours, including time to pause and take in the surroundings. With experienced guidance throughout, this walk offers a safe and enjoyable way to explore the woodland after dark.
Ideal for those looking for something a little different, this Halloween night hike combines nature, history, and atmosphere in one of Kent’s most well-known woodlands, creating a memorable evening out on the trails.
