KIN Walk 28: Win Hill in the Peaks

We'll be meeting in Kelham Island and then catching the 257 bus from Sheffield Interchange (it usually runs from stand D3, you will need to pay for your own bus fare) to Yorkshire Bridge in the Derwent Valley. After leaving the bus we cross over to Ladybower Reservoir dam wall with Win Hill summit in front of us. Heading across the dam wall, which in itself has some fabulous views, we join an old railway track bed that was built at the time of the dam's construction.

This is a steady incline that reveals a superb view of Bamford Edge and below is Bamford village with the steepled church rising above the houses.

Joining a lane, we meander upwards into Thornhill village, a small pace nestled on the hillside, where we will see the ancient village water well before carrying on across the steep hillside and making a steady ascent of the hill.

It can be quite muddy & a little slippy on this track so we will need to take our time depending on the conditions, however as we continue upwards between the gorse hedges the landscape opens up onto more of an open heath allowing an appreciation of the scene opening along the Derwent Valley.

From here we make our final ascent to the summit, 1,516 ft above sea level, and despite the fabulous view along most of the ascent there is still a visual climax awaiting at the summit, with 360 degree views of Mam Tor, Kinder Scout, Derwent Edge, Langsett Moor and Bamford Edge and almost into Sheffield itself!

After this visual treat we will head down through the bracken and moorland until we reach the treeline and the forest where gentle pathways weave through the trees and back to the dam wall. Crossing back over we can call into the Yorkshire Bridge pub for a well deserved beverage of your choice before catching the bus back to Sheffield.

KIN Walks is a series of different walks led by outdoor expedition leader and artist Robin Widdowson, and local resident and historian Anders Hanson. The aim is to give you a fully rounded and varied outdoor experience of both urban and rural walks that are in easy reach of the city.

The name KIN Walks has two meanings: it stands for Kelham Island & Neepsend, where the walks usually start out, but more importantly KIN (as in kinship) stands for friendship, family and community: something this programme of walks is very much about.

What to bring:

Refreshments and packed lunch, plenty of water, and some money or a card to pay for the bus and any refreshments you may want to get. We will stop for lunch en-route and so please bring your own food with you as we won't be near a shop.

Sturdy footwear is recommended as most of the terrain is off road on footpaths and can get muddy if it is or has been wet recently. We also recommend bringing along warm and waterproof clothing and a hat. If you are responsible for others, please ensure that they are suitably dressed.
