Begin jaren ’80 richtte Kim Gordon (US) mee het superbe en baanbrekende gitaarlawaai-gezelschap Sonic Youth op die exact 15 jaar geleden abrupt ophielden te bestaan. Sindsdien heeft ze een onuitwisbare invloed uitgeoefend op vlak van muziek, kunst, literatuur en film. Na een carrière van om en bij de 40 jaar ‘debuteerde’ ze in 2019 onverwacht op haar eentje met het fenomenale No Home Record. Ook met haar tweede soloalbum - The Collective - maakte ze grote indruk. Dat resulteerde in evenveel AB-concerten in respectievelijk 2022 (tussen de release van No Home Record en 2022 zat er een flinke Covid-kloof) en 2024 (een door AB mede georganiseerd concert in de prestigieuze Bozar).
Enter: PLAY ME, Gordon’s 3e album, opnieuw geproduced door Justin Raisen die al eerder achter de knoppen zat bij Charli XCX, Sky Ferreira en Yves Tumor. Gordon opteerde naar eigen zeggen voor meer “melodic beats and the motorik drive of krautrock.” Alsook: “We wanted the songs to be short. We wanted to do it really fast. It’s more focused, and maybe more confident. I always kind of work off of rhythms, and I knew I wanted it to be even more beat-oriented than the last one.”
Opvallendste track: BYEBYE25!, een remake van BYE BYE, de eertijdse openingstrack van The Collective. Een stroom woorden afkomstig van ‘Trump’s banned words list, terms the administration has flagged to cancel grant and research proposals.’ En adem ongemakkelijk:
