The critically-acclaimed and award-winning Kidz Danz Kompany, San Diego’s premier children’s dance company, presents “Douglass” , at the Liberty Hall Theatre (2700 E 4th St, National City, CA 91950) on May 22-23, 2026 at 7pm.
Join us for an evening of history coming to life through dance that incorporated elements of education and entertainment. To start off the night, audiences will be treated to a special guest appearance from the MPD professional dance company. Minaqua McPherson and Eva Anderson will both have a new piece of choreography performed by the KDK dancers that tie into the overall theme of the show. McPherson’s dance is inspired by Fredrick Douglass’s belief that military service could offer a path to freedom for formerly enslaved men. Following his 1863 call to arms, Black soldiers, later known as the Buffalo Soldiers, fought for recognition, identity, and equality. This piece honors their strength, resilience, and enduring legacy. Anderson was influenced by Fredrick Douglass’s 1845 quote, “The slave auctioneer’s bell and the church-going bell chime in with each other, and the bitter cries of the heart-broken slaves are drowned in the religious shouts of his pious master. Revivals of religion and revivals in the slave-trade go hand in hand together”. Yasmina Devos brings to life “Douglass” which takes audiences on a movement journey through the life and times of Fredrick Douglass from childhood and life before freedom to fighting to find his own identity. Each section offers a glimpse of his experiences and how they shaped one of history’s most influential voices.
The dancers of KDK not only are learning dance, but they are also learning history and are developing a deeper understanding of emotions and stories expressed through movement. Don’t miss out on witnessing history come to life on stage through the power of dance!
