Kids Crafting Workshop with artist Tristan Lim

In this hands-on workshop for ages 8-12, young artists will be guided in creating their very own dreamlike sculptures that blend the familiar with the fantastical. Drawing inspiration from Tristan Lim’s Shape Hereafter (redux), young participants will experiment with shapes and materials to invent imaginary creatures with surreal forms. Along the way, they will discover how their own stories, cultural experiences, and imaginations can shape the art they create.

Forest Discovery Centre @ OCBC Arboretum, Pangolin Room, Level 2, Gallop Extension, Singapore Botanic Gardens (Closed every last Monday of the month)

• Please note this workshop involves the use of craft knives and cutting tools under close adult supervision. Parental consent is required for participation.
• All materials will be provided.
• Photographs may be taken during the workshop as part of our documentation. By attending this programme, you consent to being photographed or filmed.
• While this workshop is intended for young kids, parents or guardian are most welcome to sign-up and join in the activities.
• Please arrive at least 10 minutes before the programme begins.
• We kindly ask that pets are not brought to the programme venues.

About the artist:

Tristan Lim’s (b. 1993) practice explores the material and existential significance of bodily form in contemporary life by foregrounding questions of perception and desire. Abstract bodies and mutant subjects emerge in his artworks, expressed through drawing, installation and new media. Tristan’s works have been featured at Ota Fine Arts, The Arts House, and Singapore Art Museum at 8Q. He has participated in the Facebook (Meta) Artist-in-residence (AIR) programme and presented work in Singapore Night Festival, Singapore Light to Night Festival, ART SG, and overseas in Spain, Vietnam and Taiwan. Most recently, he is a recipient of the inaugural NAC-UAS Arts Scholarship in 2024.

About Grafting Together / Apart exhibition:

Presented at the Singapore Botanic Gardens—a historic site of botanical exchange and experimentation—Grafting Together / Apart draws on the act of grafting, where different plants are joined to grow as one, as a fertile metaphor for how cultures and identities are shaped through shared histories and encounters.

Featuring works by recent BA ( Hons) and MA Fine Arts graduates of LASALLE College of the Arts-Cavin Lim, Hendra Selamat, Liz Yap, and Tristan Lim–the exhibition explores what happens when different cultures, memories, and traditions come into contact with each other. It attends to everyday moments of encounter and exchange, where differences are negotiated and grafted into fresh forms. Grafting is rarely seamless; it entails friction and a degree of risk.

What emerges may be unevenly joined, fragile, even resistant at first—yet it is through this tension, amidst difference that new forms begin to take root. The exhibition reflects how identity itself is never fixed, but a continual process of becoming, shaped and reshaped through ongoing connections and transformations.
