KFF Fly Tying 101

Hosted by the Kisatchie Fly Fishers, this introductory fly tying course is a great foundation to the art of fly tying. In this 3-hour workshop, you'll learn about the tools, types of materials and techniques required to get started successfully in tying flies.
Even if you have been tying a while, you will find the class helpful. We will cover basic techniques that are useful in many different patterns – and you will take home at least three flies that you tied.
All materials and tools will be provided, but if you have you own tools, please bring them. You will tie three different patterns and focus on the specific techniques used in each. We will tie a Zebra Midge, Bully Bluegill Spider, and Woolly Bugger.
Here are some of the topics and skills we will cover:
Vises – different types and costs.
Basic tools – those you need to get started and those that are nice to have.
Materials – We will show various materials, different types of hooks, thread, and beads and their uses.
Loading the bobbin, fixing the hook in the vise, and starting thread.
Thread control.
Whip finishing and the half-hitch finish.
Tying in different materials – feathers, wire, legs, chenille, flash, etc.
Dubbing – basic dubbing techniques.
Tying in and wrapping hackle feathers (palmering).
Sizing and proportions
Bottled water will also be provided.
