What will it take to restore whole landscapes in ways that work for climate, nature and people?
This talk will explore the emerging field of large‑scale nature recovery in the UK, set against ambitious national targets and the rapidly changing funding landscape created by the Environmental Land Management Schemes (ELMS) and their nature recovery programmes.
Speaker David Coomes will focus on the work of the Centre for Landscape Regeneration, which he co‑directs, a research centre led by the University of Cambridge that develops evidence, tools and partnerships to regenerate key British landscapes using cost‑effective, nature‑based solutions delivering social, environmental and economic benefits.
Drawing on deep dives in three very different, iconic landscapes – the Fens, the Cairngorms and Cumbria – David will show how researchers are combining ecological science, remote sensing and community‑led research to understand what works on the ground, and share what his team has learnt so far about the practical ingredients needed for successful, durable landscape‑scale nature recovery.
