Kevin Koch is a Professor Emeritus of English at Loras College in Dubuque, IA, where he taught courses in creative nonfiction, nature writing, among others. When not teaching or writing, he can be found bicycling, hiking, cross-country skiing, or canoeing/kayaking in the Driftless Land.
Midwest Bedrock: The Search for Nature's Soul in America's Heartland takes readers on a journey across all twelve Midwest states to uncover the region’s natural beauty and rich stories. Author Kevin Koch explores landscapes that defy typical stereotypes, from Wisconsin’s 1,100-mile Ice Age Trail marking the furthest reach of the last glacier, to Minnesota’s Lake Itasca, the headwaters of the Mississippi River, and Indiana’s Hoosier National Forest, home to hidden graveyards from abandoned farm communities. Combining history, memoir, and interview-based research, Koch’s narrative weaves together the layers of the Midwest’s natural and cultural heritage, offering a deeper understanding of its land and legacy.
