"Sin Eaters could be described as a “trans -temporal folk or cautionary tale.”
The tale begins in rural Ireland, 1847. We are introduced to two “ sin eaters”, Finn and Nora. In Celtic cultures, a sin eater was hired by the grieving family to consume the food at a wake for the dead. In doing so, the sin eater devoured the sins of the deceased, but at the peril of their own souls. Finn and Nora are contracted by Widow Malloy to perform the ritual for Old Malloy , a particularly unsavory character. Eventually they refuse to complete the task, and as a result are mysteriously thrust forward into the year 2020 to the offices of a cyber security company known as THE FIRM.
In 2020, Michael and Sybil are applying for positions as Content Moderators for the FIRM. They undergo various interviews and training, which often seem borderline absurd , to prepare them to be dedicated members of the FIRM’s Content Moderating Team.
Meanwhile, Finn and Nora, displaced in time and space, try to understand their current circumstances. They can see and hear, but are not seen or heard. As their time in the 21st century increases, Finn and Nora discover critical differences in their experiences there.
Both Michael and Sybil suffer from the stress of their jobs. Their days are filled with digital trauma, hate and violence, all of which they are required to pass some judgement on. Do they pass , flag or shut down these sites?
