A 1 day workshop to focus on mark making through the process of screenprinting.
Participants will be shown a range of mark-making sources that Kelly uses in her screenprinting practice
This will include drawing directly onto a transparent film, experimenting with a range of materials to create a variety of their own marks.
Processing elements of other source materials for example from a drawing/sketch/collage you have made, enlarging /reducing imagery to fit layers together
PLEASE NOTE: There is no element of Photoshop or digital processing involved, this is a very direct method of processing direct drawing.
A collection of these layers will be exposed onto screens to establish the correct exposure for different density of marks. These will then be printed to demonstrate the effect the different exposures have on the finished image and can be used as a guide for further work.
Everyone will be able to take away any printed material they will find useful to further their own work and as a reference for the correct exposures.
If you are also booked onto Kelly’s 2 day workshop you can use the time to prepare for your print the next day
Screen printing is a very versatile printmaking technique, creating simple or complex imagery by producing a series of colour separations which are then individually screen printed onto paper. Edinburgh based illustrator and printmaker Kelly Stewart creates her original screenprints by drawing and preparing every layer by hand, resulting in endless possibilities for combining drawings, painterly marks, collage material, pattern, handwritten text and found graphic patterns together in the one image. The water based tusche washes and acrylic brushstrokes create lithographic-like line qualities which are then transported directly into the screen print process.
Printmaking knowledge is not necessary. If you are an artist working in a different medium or would like to get back into some hand generated work then this is a great opportunity for you.
