Weymouth Center for the Arts & Humanities in Southern Pines is opening a new chapter in its enduring literary story with the launch of the Katharine Boyd Writers’ Circle—a program that builds on the estate’s storied legacy and deep ties to the creative community. Adding excitement to this historic expansion, the Circle’s inaugural guest guide will be acclaimed North Carolina author Jim Gulledge, well-known for his novel Green Forest, Red Earth, Blue Sea and his distinguished reputation at Pfeiffer University.
Welcoming Jim Gulledge and His Signature Approach
Jim Gulledge brings his signature workshop, “So, What’s Your Story?”—a popular Pfeiffer University class—to Weymouth as the first offering of the Writers’ Circle. With sessions launching on Monday, September 29, Gulledge will guide aspiring writers through twice-monthly evening meetings that begin by delving into personal genealogies. The initial weeks will encourage writers to look past family trees and burial stones, asking, “Who were your ancestors and how did they come here?” and “Which ones arrived by choice, and which came against their will?” Participants will excavate not just names and dates, but the emotional core of their own histories. Moving forward, Gulledge’s hands-on approach invites participants to tell their family stories aloud. Some will channel their discoveries into poems, short stories, or even paintings or musical pieces—whatever medium calls to them. The aim is to help each writer find the “nugget” that moves, shocks, or inspires, and to spark the courage to share it with a supportive community.
Community Connection and Charting the Future
Weymouth’s new program is more than a class—it’s a creative community. After the first series of workshops, the group will forge its own path, deciding how best to keep the story circle alive and vibrant. Throughout, the supportive spirit of Katharine Boyd and the tradition of creative exchange that defined earlier generations remains central.
As Jim Gulledge lends his talents, Weymouth Center continues its dedication to fostering artistic growth and preserving its unique literary heritage.
Registration is very limited. Meetings will begin on Monday, September 29 from 6 - 8pm and continue bi-weekly on the second and fourth Monday of each month through November.
