Kapil Mandrekar
Director of Marketing and Aquatic Ecologist for Project Piaba. In this role, Kapil seeks to strengthen links between the Rio Negro aquarium fishery (Barcelos Municipality, Amazonas, Brazil) to aquarium industry/hobby in the United States by creating a sense of place attachment. His main role is to network and build relationships with the hobby industry to find ways for mutually beneficial conservation partnerships working with retailers, livestock wholesalers, ancillary goods manufacturers and dry goods providers to the aquarium hobby. Kapil is a biologist, with Master degrees in Ecology & Environmental Science and a PHD Aquatic Ecology/Ichthyology. He has been published in Aqua, International Journal of Ichthyology.
He has made 5 trips to the Amazon in Brazil. Other than Brazil, he has traveled and observed fish from Belize, Mexico, Ecuador, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, India and throughout many places in the USA. Born in Toledo, OH and raised in a house rich in aquaria! When his family moved to Kalamazoo, MI; he and his father joined the Southwest Michigan Aquarium Society (SWMAS) and I have. He has been a member since the age of 3 years. Growing up in SWMAS has exposed him to many amazing hobbyists who took the time to teach him about keeping and breeding all kinds of fishes. He has kept to a wide variety of fishes and have kept/bred everything from cichlids, killifish, livebearers, characins, labyrinth fishes, cyprinids, goldfish/koi, fancy bettas, planted aquariums, saltwater, oddballs, catfish and more! Before he graduated from High school he ran over 40 aquariums and 5000 gallons of indoor/outdoor ponds.
He is a member of the American Society of Ichthyology and Herpetology and the American Cichlid Association (ACA), currently serving on the ACA board of Trustees.
