This journey marks the third trip in our Four Corners of Kansas Day Trip Series, designed to explore the people, places, and stories that define every corner of the Sunflower State. On this installment, we travel from Wichita into southeast Kansas, discovering adventure, frontier justice, and elegant history along the way. Our day begins with a morning departure from Wichita, arriving at the Martin and Osa Johnson Safari Museum in Chanute. This unique museum celebrates the lives of world-renowned explorers, filmmakers, and authors whose African safaris captivated the world. The visit is self-guided, with engaging storyboards, artifacts, and a 10-minute introductory film. A museum director and volunteer will be available to answer questions, and an elevator provides access to the second floor. We’ll spend approximately 1–2 hours exploring the museum. We then depart Chanute and enjoy a scenic 50-minute drive to Coffeyville, where lunch awaits at The Yoke, a beloved local favorite. After lunch, we take a short walk—just half a block—to the infamous site of the Dalton Gang raid, including Death Alley, where the dramatic events of Coffeyville’s outlaw past unfolded. From there, we continue to the Dalton Defenders Museum, featuring extensive collections related to the Dalton raid, early Coffeyville history, memorabilia from Wendell Willkie, and artifacts honoring baseball legend Walter Johnson. Our final stop is the stately Brown Mansion, a beautifully preserved 1906 home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Perched atop a hill, the mansion features sweeping verandas, an ornate portico, and interiors still furnished with the Brown family’s original belongings, offering a captivating glimpse into Kansas’ past elegance. As we return to Wichita, relax and reflect on another memorable chapter in our Four Corners of Kansas series—where history, adventure, and local legends come together for a perfect day trip. Reminder- if you attend all four trips in this series, you’ll get 40% off the final trip!
