Celebrating World Rivers Day: A Call to Action for Kafue River Conservation
On 28th September, 2025, African Rivers, a nonprofit international organization, will host an event at the Kafue River bridge to commemorate this year's World Rivers Day. This global event, celebrated annually on the fourth Sunday of September, aims to raise awareness about the importance of rivers and encourage their protection and stewardship.
As Mark Angelo, the founder of World Rivers Day, aptly puts it, "Rivers are the arteries of our planet; they are lifelines in the truest sense." With millions of people in over 100 countries participating in this event, it highlights the significance of rivers to ecosystems and human societies.
African Rivers, in collaboration with other stakeholders, will lead the celebrations in Zambia, focusing on increasing public awareness and promoting river stewardship across the country and continent. The event will feature a range of activities, including: river cleanups to promote river conservation; Kafue River Fun Run Marathon for wellness and upscaling climate action; a boat cruise to promote local tourism; water quality testing to support aquatic and human life; educational outings to raise awareness about importance of rivers; and carry out community riverside celebrations for local engagement.
The event will provide a unique opportunity for individuals, communities, and organizations to come together and appreciate the importance of healthy rivers. Furthermore, the event the World Rivers Day, will help stakeholders in Zambia and beyond to seriously work towards a common goal of protecting and preserving our rivers for future generations.
