Kabul – the capital and largest city of Afghanistan – will certainly make you think and feel many things, a destination for the bold at a time when many will have a word or two to share about your adventure choice, let’s have a quick look and see for ourselves.
High in a mountain valley between the Kabul River and the Hindu Kush, dense with history dating back thousands of years, a Silk Road destination half-way between Istanbul and Hanoi, a crossroads between Tartary, India, and Persia, and ruled by dynasties and empires from the Kushans and Hindu Shahis to the Turks, Samanids, and Mongols, among many others. Once the summer capital of the Mughal Empire, not until 1747 did it come under local rule, with Kabul becoming the official capital of the Afghan Empire in 1776, the same year America declared independence from the British!
A short visit here will give a mere taste to a city that was once filled with gardens, bazaars, and palaces, a few we will see ourselves including the Gardens of Babur with its many statues of historical figures, the Daral Aman Palace built in the early 20th Century for the last King of Afghanistan, and the curious markets of birds and local crafts which once was part of the Hippie Trail in the 1960s for trekkers and travellers taking their sweet time on the road to Kathmandu and beyond.
With opportunities to meet local Afghans in the city and country, to tour a history full of unexpected diversity, and to see a way of life in a place where life goes on...
Let’s go!!
Day 1 // Darulaman Palace, Museums, British Cemetery
We’ll start the day on the outskirts of central Kabul in search of the Darulaman Palace, if lucky we can poke around the restored home of the former King of Afghanistan. Nearby we’ll find the National Museum, full of Buddha statues, Bactrian art, and many artifacts from Silk Road times.
Further on we’ll drop by the Babur Garden before returning to the city center and dropping by the Kabre Gora, the cemetery of foreigners, originally built for British soldiers in the late 19th Century. We’ll return to our hotel in the evening for dinner and rest.
Day 2 // Shamshira Mosque, Qarga Lake or Istalif
We’ll try to make quick morning stop at local NGO doing workshops for young Afghans in wood carving, calligraphy, and small craft businesses. Afterwards we’ll check out the Shah-e Soh Shamshira Mosque and then take a trip out to Qarga Lake for a picnic lunch and short trek around the area, if time we’ll visit village of Istalif for a look into Afghan rural life before heading back into Kabul for an evening panorama from the TV Tower.
Day 3 // Ka Faroshi Bird Market, Chicken Street
After breakfast, we’ll check out a few curious markets in Kabul, the Ka Faroshi bird market, a very favourite hobby of the locals, and the Chicken Street souvenir shops, an area once known for being on the “Hippie Trail” and now full local handicrafts and a few impossible items, we surely can’t say.
Last lunch a local bistro before transfer to airport for flight back home.
