Kaapuia - Suicide Prevention Week Hīkoi 2026

Ki te kotahi te kākaho ka whati, ki te kāpuia e kore e whati.
If a single reed stands alone, it will break. But bound together, it cannot. — Kīngi Tāwhiao
Te Kāpuia is a free community day at Hamilton Lake Domain on Friday 11 September 2026, held during Suicide Prevention Week. Rather than something heavy, we're marking the week by celebrating everything good that's already in our community: a walk, music, kai, market stalls, a waka ama experience on the lake, creative stations, and a stage giving rangatahi a genuine voice.
Support services will be woven right through the day alongside the fun, so people can find what they need without ever having to go looking for it. Because none of us can carry our communities alone — but bound together, like the reeds in this whakataukī, we're unbreakable. Our mokopuna are the future, and they deserve a community that shows up for each other.
This falls during Suicide Prevention Week, and the way we're choosing to acknowledge it is by celebrating community resilience and connection — the light that carries us through the dark. That's our theme this year: sparkles, the light through the darkness. Not something heavy, but something that shines.
We encourage everyone to come along dressed in their favourite glittery and sparkly attire! Whether it's sequins, shimmer, sparkle, we'd love to see everyone embracing the theme and adding some extra shine to the day.
