JVP Kids & Family: Liberatory Education Series

Overview: Over the course of three sessions - utilizing an array of learning tools including reading, discussion, movement, art, interviewing, podcast-making, and more - families will explore larger concepts such as liberation, freedom, and justice, and then dig deeper into current events, and events in history, primarily geared towards utilizing a collective liberation framework when thinking about Palestinian liberation. This three-part series will support students' sense of leadership and autonomy in showing up for justice and forwarding solidarity and liberatory movements. As a culminating project, those a part of this 3-part series will have the opportunity to lead sections of our JVP Kids Family Freedom Seder, scheduled for April 6th.

Age: Geared towards students in grades 3-6, but open to kids of all ages. If we have a large range of ages, we may move towards smaller age-based groupings (i.e grades 3-5, grades 6-8, etc.).

PLEASE NOTE: Tickets are separated by Adult (18+) and Kid. Within the Kid tickets, it is divided by age band to keep track of age group numbers. Adults in attendance must be family members or guardians of students attending the event. Adults are required to be at event with student(s) and cannot drop-off.

Topics Covered:

Session 1 - What is Liberation?

Considering larger themes of justice and rights through art, writing, and mindful movement. Understanding the difference between "equality" being more of a band-aid whereas "justice" is fundamentally changing the systems that are used to oppress and mistreat certain folks while others reap the benefits.

Session 2 - Palestine Past & Present

Utilizing maps and storytelling to learn an abridged history of Palestine, indigenous land stewardship in contrast to colonial conceptions of land, and building an understanding of current events and the ongoing genocide.

Session 3: How to Show Up

Brainstorming and discussing possible responses to the previous session's learning. Student-led and could range from poster-making, article writing, and creating a kids' podcast. We will learn about past kid-led movement organizing and consider ways we can respond to injustice, asking where do we go from here?
