Justice LaForme, who is Anishnaabe, and a member of the Mississauga of the Credit First Nation, is the first Indigenous person in Canadian history to be appointed to an appellate court.
Justice LaForme was the first Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. In recognition of his leadership and integrity, the Elders, on behalf of the National Indian Residential School Survivors Society, cited the 7th Grandfather Teaching of “Truth” and gifted him an Eagle Feather. Among many other honours, Harry serves as Honourary Chair of the Board of Directors of the Alliance of Canadians Combatting Antisemitism, and has been recognized for his allyship by the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal.
Drawing from his personal heritage and profound sense of justice, Justice LaForme explores the theme of Indigeneity and Zionism. As he stated in a recent Times of Israel interview, “I don’t know of anyone who can claim indigeneity more than the Jewish people in Israel.”
Justice LaForme’s remarks will be followed by a response from Irwin Cotler, renowned human rights activist and Zionist, offering his perspective on the shared struggles for self-determination and justice. The evening will be moderated by Éloge Butera, a Rwandan-born human rights advocate and Temple member.
Together, these voices promise a thought-provoking conversation on identity and belonging, exploring what it means to stand in solidarity across histories and homelands.

S’appuyant sur son héritage personnel et son profond sens de la justice, le juge LaForme explorera les liens entre l’autochtonie et le sionisme. Comme il l’a déclaré dans une entrevue au Times of Israel : « Je ne connais aucun peuple qui puisse revendiquer une autochtonie plus grande que celle du peuple juif en Israël. »
Les propos du juge LaForme seront suivis d’une réponse du professeur Irwin Cotler, militant renommé des droits humains et sioniste engagé, qui partagera sa réflexion sur les luttes communes pour l’autodétermination et la justice.
