About this Event

On June 19, 2026, Busboys & Poets - Takoma will be the site for an afternoon of inspiring and empowering poetry with poet and activist Ewuare X. Osayande. Osayande is the author of several books of poetry including Blood Luxury , Whose America? and Black Phoenix Uprising. Known for his unsparing critiques of white supremacy, sexism, and class oppressions, Osayande’s poetry is rooted in Black liberation movements across the United States and around the world. His latest collection, Our Breath is the Whisper of Our Ancestors' Defiance, has been called the poetic testament of the Black Lives Matter generation by Dr. Joyce A. Joyce, author of Ijala: Sonia Sanchez and the African Poetic Tradition.

“Osayande’s poems are anthems for 21st Century Black folk, Harriet’s rifle behind our backs in the swamp. He reminds us that the poet, not the politician, is our pilot of social consciousness. No injustice esapes his pen.” Yolanda Wisher, 2017 Poet Laureate, City of Philadelphia.

With Our Breath is the Whisper of Our Ancestors' Defiance, Osayande is our impassioned ambassador of Blackness, extolling the virtues of justice as love in poems that read like psalms and proverbs for a world on fire.

The 2024 recipient of the Semsker Prize for Civil Rights Law from the University of the District of Columbia School of Law, Ewuare Osayande currently serves as the Deputy Executive Director of the Citizens Police Oversight Commission in Philadelphia, PA. He is a former professor of African American Studies at Rutgers University. Founder of the Black Arts Movement and Black liberation icon Amiri Baraka has called Osayande, "one of the United States' most important poets."
