About this Event

Juneteenth Black Educational Leadership Summit

A community conversation exploring the past, present, and future of Black education will take place in Kansas City during a special Juneteenth Education Summit and Book Signing on Sunday, June 14, 2026 from 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM at the Southeast Community Center, 4201 E 63rd St, Kansas City, MO 64130.

The event will feature historian and educator Dr. N.M. Shabazz, author of Black History for Beginners: From the Cottonfields to a Village: What Went Wrong with Black Education? The summit will explore historical and contemporary questions about Black education, including how African American communities historically produced strong educational outcomes despite limited resources, and what lessons from the past might inform solutions today.

The program will include:

•Community reception with hors d’oeuvres: 2:30PM – 3:00PM
•Juneteenth Presentation by former Missouri State Representative and historian Sharon Sanders Brooks

• Panel discussion featuring educators and community leaders
• Audience Q&A
• Book signing with the author

6. Dr. Roger Wiliams, Jr., retired principal, 30 years KCPS
