Juneteenth and America’s Living Heritage at 250
About this Event
Carrying the Journey Forward: Juneteenth and America’s Living Heritage at 250
Join us for an unforgettable community celebration as we commemorate Juneteenth and reflect on America’s 250-year journey through history, culture, music, storytelling, and remembrance.
Hosted by the Hamilton Hood Foundation, this family-friendly event will take place at Pierce Chapel Methodist Church in Midland, Georgia, and is centered on the story of the nationally recognized Pierce Chapel African Cemetery—one of the oldest known burial grounds of enslaved Africans and their descendants in Harris County, Georgia, established circa 1827. Designated by the National Trust for Historic Preservation as one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, Pierce Chapel stands as a remarkable testament to resilience, heritage, and community.
This special Juneteenth commemoration will bring history to life through inspiring artistic performances, historical interpretation, genealogy reflections, and living history presentations that honor the generations who carried the journey forward.
Featured guests include acclaimed banjoist Lee Johnson, whose music celebrates the African American roots of the banjo, and gifted violinist Keldren Reddick, whose performances weave together history, culture, and artistry. Attendees will also experience presentations by the 9th & 10th Regiment Buffalo Soldiers, community storytellers, historical monologues, and musical tributes that connect the legacy of Juneteenth to America’s continuing story.
Whether you are a lifelong resident, a descendant, a history enthusiast, or simply looking for a meaningful way to celebrate freedom and heritage, this event offers an opportunity to learn, reflect, and connect with others in a spirit of remembrance and hope.
Bring your family, invite your friends, and be part of a community gathering that honors the past while inspiring future generations.
