Calvert Library | Prince Frederick, MD
Come to Calvert Library Prince Frederick this June to enjoy 3 in-library screenings on 1 incredible day! First up is "Paul Robeson: Tribute to an Artist," a 1979 documentary short that explores the life of Paul Robeson, and how his public image changed as he became increasingly involved in the Civil Rights Movement, perfect for African American Music Appreciation Month. Then for Men's Mental Health Month, the second screening will be the feature "Taste of Cherry," a 1997 film by legendary Iranian director Abbas Kiarostami. Taking place within the span of one day, we follow a man consumed by depression and alienation, confronted with the inexplicable beauty of the everyday when talking to three different people living in Tehran. Finally to finish off the day, we'll be watching "The Watermelon Woman" from 1996. A piece that finds itself pushing the boundaries of the American New Queer Cinema movement of the 90's, "The Watermelon Woman" confronts the many injustices marginalized people face, and the hierarchies of power that exist within those margins. While this sounds intimidating at first, really the film is a great comedy that invites the viewer to laugh with the many ridiculous moments a woman has to deal with as she struggles to make a documentary; and it's our pick for celebrating PRIDE Month!
Join us for 1, 2 or all 3 films, with an optional discussion following each!
