About this Event

Are you a Black woman living in Toronto who is interested in meeting new people and building your network?

If so, Black Women Connect! Book Club may be perfect for you. This Toronto-based club focuses on celebrating Black literature, sisterhood, and reading. Our mission is to bring together Black women who enjoy reading fiction and nonfiction books by African-descended writers to have meaningful conversations, form connections, and socialize. Each month, we choose a book to use as the basis for discussing our experiences as Black women. Our club aims to inform, empower, inspire, and enrich the lives of our members through reading and connecting with each other. In addition to our book club, we also host special members-only brunches, retreats, thematic events, and other social events.

đź“š Explore the Provocative World of "Chain-Gang All-Stars" in Our June Book Club Meeting

This June, join us for a compelling and thought-provoking discussion on "Chain-Gang All-Stars" by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, a book that has garnered attention as a nominee for Best Science Fiction and Best Debut Novel in 2023.

About the Book:

"Chain-Gang All-Stars" is set in a dystopian future where the American private Pr*son system has evolved into a grotesque spectacle of entertainment and exploitation. The novel focuses on Loretta Thurwar and Hamara "Hurricane Staxxx" Stacker, two top women gladiators fighting for their freedom in a system that mirrors the harsh realities of systemic racism and unchecked capitalism.

Why You Should Join:

  • Engrossing Narrative: Engage with a story that combines thrilling action with a deep examination of societal issues.
  • Powerful Themes: Delve into the exploration of systemic racism, mass incarceration, and the meaning of freedom in America.
  • Dynamic Characters: Analyze the complex relationship between Thurwar and Staxxx, set against the backdrop of a morally corrupt system.

Event Highlights:
  • In-Depth Discussion: Explore the novel's multifaceted characters and the ethical dilemmas they face.
  • Interactive Dialogue: Share your insights and perspectives on the novel’s portrayal of a dystopian society.
