About this Event
It’s Happening! Restoring the Rapids to the Grand River
Learn more about this exciting, monumental project to revitalize the rapids in the Grand River as work begins this summer!
We will be joined by:
- Matt Chapman, Executive Director of Grand Rapids WhiteWater, who will discuss the history of the project, some of the challenges encountered, the environmental aspects addressed, and how bringing back the rapids will benefit the river and residents;
- Marty Holtgren, PhD, founder of Encompass Socio-ecological Consulting, whose firm played a crucial role in evaluating fish passage and habitat evaluation metrics during the design process; and
- Todd Munger, PE, MSCE, Geotechnical Department Manager, Materials Testing Consultants, whose firm was responsible for conducting the river sediment sampling.
The project involves bringing back the rapids in a safe and environmentally responsible way, working closely with community partners, government agencies and river development experts, to revitalize a 2.5 mile stretch of the Grand River. The purpose is to recreate rapids that provide recreational and fitness opportunities to the general public, and to promote an environmentally sound design that will enhance the sustainability of fish, wildlife and natural resources within the Grand River.
The 11:00 AM morning technical session will be followed by lunch, with tee times beginning at 2:00 PM (9 holes; golf is optional). Registration begins at 10:30 AM.

Scholarship Fundraiser
The annual Technical Session & Golf Outing event serves as our primary fund-raiser for the scholarship program that rewards regional students that have demonstrated leadership and commitment to our chapter’s mission. The combined technical session and golf outing is a great way to network with colleagues and clients. It can also be an excellent opportunity to promote team building with your associates.
Recognizing the critical role emerging professionals play in the future of air pollution control, waste management and other environmental management fields, WM-AWMA has long prioritized efforts to develop the next generation of environmental professionals in industry, government agencies, and research, as well as those of educators, attorneys, and consultants within West Michigan. Over the past years we have honored these future leaders by providing scholarships. Since 1994, WM-AWMA is proud to have presented $200,000 in scholarships to over 100 deserving students.
Your tax-deductible contribution will help WM-AWMA continue this tradition of support. Please give generously. Even if you are unable to attend this event, remember that contributions to the scholarship fund are always welcome.
