Une suite de reconstitutions par des enfants, qui racontent les mythes, les événements historiques et les personnalités culturelles qui ont contribué à donner à la Norvège l’image d’une nation pacifique. Ces mises en scène sont entrelacées avec des images d’archives, des discours politiques et des voix off tirées de films hollywoodiens dépeignant la Norvège typique. Dans une déconstruction satirique du « régime de bonté » qui imprègne la société norvégienne, Manna et Storihle explorent les dilemmes moraux inhérents à l’histoire de l’une des nations les plus riches de la planète.
An experimental documentary exploring the myths and images that have enabled an understanding of Norway as a nation of peace and benevolence. The binding element is a series of enactments by children that recount the myths, historical events and cultural personas that have propelled the image of Norway as a peace nation. These stagings are weaved together with archival footage, political speeches and voice-overs from Hollywood films describing the quintessential Norway. In a satirical deconstruction of the Goodness Regime that permeates Norwegian society, Manna and Storihle explore the moral dilemmas embedded within the history of one of the wealthiest nations on earth.

Un tableau de la masculinité performative à Jérusalem-Est, telle qu’elle s’exprime dans les salles de sport, les salons de beauté et les salons de coiffure. Inspirée du film Scorpio Rising (1963) de Kenneth Anger, la vidéo recourt au collage visuel et à la bande sonore musicale pour livrer un commentaire ironique. Les personnages d’Anger – des motards vêtus de cuir – servent de contrepoint à la culture que Manna tente de dépeindre, celle des « voyous » masculins stéréotypés palestiniens.
A portrait of masculine performativity in East Jerusalem, as manifested in gyms, body shops and hair dressing parlors. Inspired by Kenneth Anger’s Scorpio Rising (1963), the video uses visual collage and the musical soundtrack as ironic commentary. Anger’s subjects — leather-clad bikers, serve as a counterpoint to the culture Manna attempts to portray, that of stereotyped male “thug” culture in Palestine. Close-up fragments construct an eroticised and parodic montage of bodies, cars and places, intersected by snippets of dialogue and a monologue about the art of a car wash. Simultaneously psychologizing the characters and seduced by them, Manna finds herself in a double bind similar to the conflicted desire that animates her protagonist as he drifts from abject rants to declamations of heroic poetry and unashamed self-praise.

Alfred Roch, éminent dirigeant palestinien sous le mandat britannique, est un homme politique au style bohème. En 1942, au plus fort de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il organise ce qui sera le dernier bal masqué en Palestine. Inspiré d’une photographie d’archive, le film recrée un aspect bon vivant et non conventionnel de la vie citadine palestinienne avant 1948. Posant silencieusement pour une photo de groupe, les pierrots démasqués et mélancoliques personnifient accidentellement la prémonition d’un avenir incertain.
Alfred Roch, a prominent Palestinian leader during the British mandate, is a politician with a bohemian panache. In 1942, at the height of WWII, he throws what will turn out to be the last masquerade in Palestine. Inspired by an archival photograph, A Sketch of Manners (Alfred Roch’s Last Masquerade) recreates an unconventional bon vivant aspect of Palestinian urban life before 1948. Posing silently for a group photo, the unmasked and melancholic pierrots accidentally personify the premonition of an uncertain future.
