July’s boom saloon Salon
About this Event
We’ve had an impromptu focus on publishing recently, with Alex Howard talking at our May Salon about the precarious path to publication, and last month we welcomed a gathering of folk from the ‘fringes’ of the publishing world for our MINI-ZINE-FAIR. This month we’re delighted to invite a publisher who takes a slightly different approach to the industry.
Edinburgh-based, multi-faceted media organisation boom saloon comprises magazine-making, a creative studio space, and community projects. Its aim is to democratise creativity within a volatile media industry. Profits from the print magazine and creative studio fund community projects, which in turn inspire and empower those facing societal and creative challenges such as forcible displacement, homelessness, and dementia.
Rachel Arthur, the founder of boom saloon will tell us a little more about their ethos using publishing to do good, and how that has evolved over the years. We will also welcome Vikki Reilly, of Publishing Scotland, who will talk about other social initiatives which aim to bring writers – and readers – together in what can be a solitary occupation.
The usual pattern applies: we gather from 6.30 in The Outhouse, and we will be in the upstairs Function Room. If you can’t join in person, the Presentation will be livestreamed on Zoom – we’ll send the link with the registration details – and we encourage people to mingle and chat for as long as they wish!
How it works...
6.30 Reception at the Outhouse Function Room

All Salon Events are free. We invite donations, or encourage people to buy us a coffee to help fund our work, buy our books, or contribute to our crowdfunder.
Accessibility Notice
Edinburgh Literary Salon is open to all those with an interest in all aspects of Literature, whether professional or personal, and to all parts of the industry: writers, publishers, booksellers etc. All are welcome, and events have free registration. While we aim to hold some events at accessible venues, our regular salon is in an upstairs room at The Outhouse. For this reason, we aim to livestream most events. If there is a problem accessing zoom, we will do what we can to assist. We strive to ensure adequate audibility, and straightforward registration. We invite positive feedback on how we can improve, even within our limitations as a non-funded organisation. We welcome open conversation.
