Sierra Club Southwest Colorado Group
The Sierra Club Southwest Colorado Group is a small but mighty group of environmental advocates and changemakers from across Montezuma, Archuleta and La Plata counties working to protect and celebrate the extraordinary landscapes of our region. Their activities include advocating to safeguard public lands and waters, raising community awareness about the native plants and wildlife that make our ecosystems unique, and supporting climate action to ensure a healthy, resilient future for people and nature. Bears Smart Durango
The mission of Bear Smart Durango is to foster a better understanding and appreciation of black bears, preserve the well-being of bears by reducing human foods that attract and create "problem" bears in the first place, and reduce human and bear conflict in the greater Durango community.
Durango residents take pride in living alongside bears and few like seeing these remarkable animals harmed simply because people allow them access to trash, bird seed, domestic fruit and the like. Bear Smart Durango works proactively to prevent human-bear conflict with the goal of keeping people safe and allowing bears to thrive in their natural environments.
Founded in 2003, their efforts are focused on educating the public on bears and respectfully living in bear country, reducing the amount of human foods available to bears, striving to have policies in place that make a meaningful difference and providing resources, tools and practical solutions in preventing and resolving human-bear conflict.
Durango Trails
Durango Trails is a nonprofit organization dedicated to planning, building, and maintaining trails, educating trail users, and creating meaningful community connections through outdoor access. We envision a community inspired by the outdoors, with Southwest Colorado recognized as a year-round destination for exceptional trails, outdoor education, and equitable access to nature for all.
Founded in 1990 as Trails 2000, the organization was established with two ambitious goals: to preserve and protect Durango's existing trail network and to build 200 miles of trail by the year 2000. Through decades of collaboration with public land managers, private landowners, volunteers, and community partners, that vision has grown into an interconnected trail system spanning urban pathways, foothill singletrack, backcountry routes, and alpine wilderness access.
In 2020, the organization proudly became Durango Trails, reflecting both its evolution and its continued commitment to serving the entire region. Today, more than 300 miles of trail lie within 30 minutes of downtown Durango—a testament to the dedication of thousands of volunteers, partners, and supporters who have helped shape our community's outdoor legacy.
Now celebrating 36 years of stewardship in 2026, Durango Trails continues to lead the planning, construction, maintenance, advocacy, and education efforts that keep our trail system thriving for residents and visitors alike. We believe trails are more than places to recreate—they are pathways to healthier people, stronger communities, thriving public lands, and lasting connections to the outdoors.
