This is a rare visit to Melbourne by two of Australia’s greatest improvisers. Carl Dewhurst and Cameron Undy met at high school in Canberra, then moved to Sydney in the late 80s. In 1994 they connected with Julien Wilson for the first time at Wangaratta Jazz Festival, kickstarting an enduring friendship that has driven them to play original music together as regularly as possible over the last 3 decades.
For over three decades JULIEN WILSON has been an exciting & integral member of the Australian Jazz Scene. His tenor saxophone style can cover an incredibly broad stylistic & emotional range and is featured on over 80 albums.
Guitarist CARL DEWHURST has been honing his craft as a creative musician for over 35 years & is widely regarded as one of Australia’s leading jazz & improvising guitarists. He has a chameleonic ability to glide effortlessly between pop, rock, blues and world musics, blurring them in to a sound that is purely his own.
CAMERON UNDY is a bassist, guitarist, composer & researcher who has had a profound influence on the Australian jazz scene as one of the country’s finest bassists, and as the co-founder of Sydney’s beloved Venue 505.
Drummer SAM BATES is a stalwart of Melbourne jazz. He has released trio and quartet albums of original music under his own name and performs with many legendary Melbourne bands.
For this special one-off quartet performance at The Jazzlab they will perform a handful of original compositions investigating shared areas of musical fascination - interactive rhythms are a touchstone for all of them. Their decades of shared experience guarantee this will be an exciting and unique event.
