Jugaad - Frugal innovation as an artistic practice

"Jugaad" is a term used throughout South Asia to define a flexible approach to problem-solving that uses limited resources in an innovative ways. Historially applied to engineering, this frugal form of innovation has applications in the UK's cultural scene as we continue to work with less resources and through rapid changes.
With the cultural landscape in the UK and globally under increasing pressure to innovate with less resources than ever, Take A Part CEO Kim Wide and Katkatha Puppet Trust founder Anurupa Roy will explore 'jugaad' as an artistic practice. What are we learning from global majority frameworks and practices we can bring into our own UK context? How can we work with increasingly limited resources to create innovative forms of practice? How can we use increasingly flexible approaches?
In this talk, Take A Part CEO Kim Wide and leading Indian puppeteer and socially engaged arts practitioner Anurupa Roy will talk about their recent Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and Clore Leadership funded research into Indian-UK Socially Engaged Arts (SEA) practices. Through noting the similarities, differences and needs of a global Socially Engaged Arts (SEA) scene, they will explore and how trans-located models of practice will help us to push for more resilient, robust and representative practices and approaches.
