[ITALIAN BELOW]On Thursday, March 12th at 4:30 p.m., we cordially invite you to the Angelicum for a public lecture by Jolanta Rzegocka, titled "Thinking the World through Theatre. Karol Wojtyła’s Dramatic Imagination."
Among the many languages Karol Wojtyła used to read the world, the language of theatre was central. It accompanied him from school drama in Wadowice and the rituals of the Polish festive and liturgical year, through the spectacle of sport and the early plays of a student at the Jagiellonian University, to the hushed, clandestine readings of the Rhapsodic Theatre under Nazi occupation – and ultimately to the theatre of war and peace itself. Across these forms runs a theatrical continuum through which Wojtyła’s generation expressed, tested, and questioned its place in history. For Wojtyła, theatre was never mere performance: it was a mode of thinking, a way of shaping experience, and a means of confronting suffering, vocation, love, and responsibility. In this lecture, Jolanta Rzegocka will revisit Wojtyła’s dramatic works to argue that theatrical metaphor and practice enabled him to rethink humanity’s relation to the Creator, to language, to culture, and to the self – and to ask what this restless theatrical energy might still offer us today.
Dr Jolanta Rzegocka is an Associate Professor of Anglo-American Literature at the Jesuit University Ignatianum in Kraków and a historian of early modern theatre. Her research explores theatre as a social and cultural practice that shaped public virtues, participation, and collective memory. She is the author of "Watching the Virtues: Playbills, Drama and the Teaching of Civic Virtue in the Jesuit Theatre of Poland–Lithuania" (Brill, 2025). She is a research member of the COST Action Prayticipate, examining participation through prayer in the late medieval and early modern world. She has also hosted "Res Poloniae: At Home with Poland" (TVP Kultura), a cultural history series – including a dedicated Italian cycle – on Poland’s artistic and intellectual connections with Europe.

Giovedì 12 marzo alle ore 16:30, vi invitiamo cordialmente all'Angelicum per una conferenza pubblica della professoressa Jolanta Rzegocka, dal titolo “Pensare il mondo attraverso il teatro. L'immaginazione drammatica di Karol Wojtyła”.
Tra i molti linguaggi che Karol Wojtyła utilizzava per leggere il mondo, quello teatrale era fondamentale. Lo ha accompagnato dai drammi scolastici a Wadowice e dai rituali dell'anno festivo e liturgico polacco, attraverso lo spettacolo dello sport e le prime opere teatrali da studente dell'Università Jagellonica, fino alle letture silenziose e clandestine del Teatro Rapsodico sotto l'occupazione nazista e, infine, al teatro della guerra e della pace stessa. Attraverso queste forme si snoda un continuum teatrale attraverso il quale la generazione di Wojtyła ha espresso, messo alla prova e interrogato il proprio posto nella storia. Per Wojtyła, il teatro non è mai stato una semplice rappresentazione: era un modo di pensare, un modo di plasmare l'esperienza e un mezzo per affrontare la sofferenza, la vocazione, l'amore e la responsabilità. In questa conferenza, Jolanta Rzegocka rivisiterà le opere drammatiche di Wojtyła per sostenere che la metafora e la pratica teatrale gli hanno permesso di ripensare il rapporto dell'umanità con il Creatore, con il linguaggio, con la cultura e con se stessa, e di chiedersi cosa questa instancabile energia teatrale possa ancora offrirci oggi.
Jolanta Rzegocka è professore associato di letteratura anglo-americana presso l'Università gesuita Ignatianum di Cracovia e storica del teatro moderno. La sua ricerca esplora il teatro come pratica sociale e culturale che ha plasmato le virtù pubbliche, la partecipazione e la memoria collettiva. È autrice di „Watching the Virtues: Playbills, Drama and the Teaching of Civic Virtue in the Jesuit Theatre of Poland–Lithuania” (Brill, 2025). È membro ricercatore della COST Action Prayticipate, che studia la partecipazione attraverso la preghiera nel tardo Medioevo e nel primo periodo moderno. Ha anche condotto „Res Poloniae: At Home with Poland” (TVP Kultura), una serie di storia culturale – che include un ciclo dedicato all'Italia – sui legami artistici e intellettuali della Polonia con l'Europa.
