A Seven-Part Introduction to the Art and Science of Birding Led by Maine Master Naturalist Christie ConstantineAre you curious about nature? Do you want to tune into the rhythms of the world around you? Birdwatching is an enjoyable, affordable, relaxing and endlessly rewarding way to connect more deeply with the outdoors. Whether you're a total beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, this fun and interactive seven-part series will introduce you to the tools, techniques, and wonders of birding - from spotting your first chickadee to recognizing warblers by their songs.
Each 2 hour class stands alone and can be taken independently. This series is geared toward adults and teens, will be classroom-based, and is open to all levels of birding experience.
Class 2: How to ID Birds*
*Weather permitting, there will be optional pre-class birding! Join us at 9:30am for a walk around library grounds, practicing binocular skills and trying our hand at finding and observing birds. Please wear sturdy footwear and bring binoculars if you have them; a few loaner pairs will be available.
You’ve found a bird - now what? Unlock the secrets of bird ID! Learn what to look and listen for, from feathers and beaks to movement and song.
Where/When/How to find birds
Bird anatomy: beaks, feathers, posture, and flight
Using basic information such as size, shape, color and markings, as well as further clues like song, behavior, habitat, location and time of year.
How to utilize field guides, bird identification apps, and online resources to compare your observations with known species
