Joymakers explores the musical mastery of Roma trumpet players in Serbia and reveals that, behind the dynamic melodies, lies a difficult life and struggle for survival. At the heart of the story is Milan Nikolić, a successor of the important mission from a legendary teacher Maskut Maskotović – to teach Roma children to play correctly and preserve their health. The encounter of American professor Nada Miljković, with Milan, provides us with an authentic and emotional insight into their lives.

Passed down through generations, the art of trumpet playing is a double-edged sword, as improper techniques and excessive air use take a toll on their health, often leading to lung diseases. What appears as pure joy and happiness to the audience is simultaneously their sole source of income and, at times, a source of pain.
