This release concert celebrates Baby Ghost, the quietly captivating debut solo album from bassist, vocalist, and composer Jordan Sand. Developed during her six years in Trondheim and released this October via the Swiss label Hallow Ground, the work showcases Sand's distinctive style of solo performance, blending high female vocalises with the bowed harmonics of the double bass.
Recorded in single takes, freely improvised, and conceived as a series of scenes or tableaus, Baby Ghost is haunting and abstract, beholden to no preconceived structures but unflinching in its curiosity about the liminal, end-of-life state; that which one might call purgatory, or the Bardo. Drawing upon influences as varied as the bass-and-voice minimalism of Nat Baldwin, the radical free improvisation of Joëlle Léandre, the chamber jazz of Christian Wallumrød, and genre-defying artists such as Kate Bush and Arthur Russell, Sand merges forms with ease, suspended somewhere between song and improvisation, memory and dream.

Bio:
Jordan Sand weaves voice into the organ-like resonances of bowed double bass. Folk string playing and tinges of Nordic jazz collide with extended techniques and the experimental, reckless spirit of the underground. At once raw and beautiful, gritty and delicate, her performances have been described as “impressive” (New York Times) and “Joni Mitchell meets Ligeti” (Omaha Under the Radar).
Originally from New York, Sand has lived in ten cities and four countries, driven twice cross-continent in July, and plays on a Hungarian double bass of otherwise unknown origin. She holds a PhD from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and is currently based between Trondheim and Brussels.
