JONGO: Afro-Brazilian Circle Dance
About this Event
Jongo is a traditional Afro-Brazilian cultural expression rooted in the African heritage of communities in southeastern Brazil. It brings together singing, drumming, and dance, traditionally performed in a circle, creating a powerful space for connection, celebration, and cultural expression.
Jongo was created and practiced by enslaved African men and women who were forced to work on coffee plantations in southeastern Brazil. Despite the violence and oppression they endured, they used music, movement, and spirituality to preserve their cultural traditions and express their experiences. Through songs and dances, they often addressed their struggles and sought protection and strength through their faith in Catholic saints and African deities.
Today, Jongo continues to be an important expression of Afro-Brazilian identity, memory, resilience, and ancestral heritage.
