JOLT Symposium - Platform Power: The Rise of Private Governance in Tech

Join the University of Richmond Journal of Law & Technology for their annual symposium highlighting the ever-changing intersection of law and technology. This year's theme, Platform Power: The Rise of Private Governance in Tech, explores how major technology companies increasingly function as private governors, shaping online speech, enforcing internal rules with legal significance, and influencing global regulatory landscapes.

Panels will examine the tension between content moderation and free-speech values, the emergence of “platform courts” and their legitimacy, and the growing power of terms of service as a form of private law. The program also considers how U.S. based platforms impose policies across borders, raising complex questions about conflict of laws, extraterritoriality, and the future of democratic oversight in a digitally interconnected world.
