Jolabokaflod (pronounced "yoh-la-bok-a-flot") is a cherished Icelandic Christmas tradition, meaning the "Christmas Book Flood," where people exchange books as gifts on Christmas Eve, then spend the evening reading them together, often with hot chocolate or sweets. Originating during WWII when paper wasn't rationed like other goods, it's a cozy ritual that emphasizes reading and family bonding, with publishing houses still releasing a flood of new titles just before Christmas, advertised in a special booklet sent to every home. Though Jolabokaflod is traditionally observed on Christmas Eve, we'll be Jolabokaflod-ing a couple days after Christmas. Hot cocoa and candy canes will be provided while we all read our own books.
