Join us in celebrating World Habitat Day and kick off Urban October - 31 days of promoting a better urban future for all. World Habitat Day was first celebrated in 1986 in Nairobi, Kenya, with the theme ‘Shelter is my right’. The day is recognised by the United Nations to reflect on the state of towns and cities worldwide, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. In 2024, the World Habitat Day will be under the theme “Engaging youth to create a better urban future.”
Together with Architecture Without Borders (AUG Norway) and the School of Landscape Architecture at NMBU, Habitat Norway has the pleasure of welcoming all - and especially students, practitioners and those working with the built environment and development issues - to our event in Oslo.

During the morning seminar, we will draw attention to places and cases where urban recovery and reconstruction efforts are currently pressing. Panel talks will focus on how we can engage “the new generation” in planning their urban present and future through participatory processes and local leadership opportunities. While rebuilding communities and cities after war, disasters and crisis is not a new topic in the complex world in which we live, our hope is to - on World Habitat Day - bring together a range of actors to exchange knowledge and critically engage in ideas that can turn discussion into action.
In the evening we will host a reception to kick-off Urban October with filmscreening (TBA), music and DJ. Light refreshments will be served.
The event is free and open for all, with the support from the Norwegian Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development (KDD).
