For the past eight years, BeachPatrol volunteers have collected and documented marine debris along Victoria's southwest coast. We've removed millions of pieces of litter, but one question keeps coming up:
What do we do with all the plastic we collect?
That's why we're excited to be taking part in the Ocean Legacy Academy, an eight-week training program developed by the Ocean Legacy Foundation in Canada.
Ocean Legacy began much like BeachPatrol – as a group of volunteers cleaning beaches and wondering how to stop valuable materials ending up in landfill. Over time, they grew into a world-leading organisation that has developed marine plastic depots, recycling systems, industry partnerships and policy change initiatives.
Over eight weeks we'll be exploring:
🔹 Marine debris and ocean plastics
🔹 Circular economy solutions
🔹 Recycling and material recovery pathways
🔹 Community leadership and advocacy
🔹 Policy and systems change
🔹 Building local solutions to global problems
Whether you're a BeachPatrol volunteer, artist, maker, educator, sustainability enthusiast, student, community leader or simply someone who cares about our coastline, we'd love you to join us.
You don't need any previous knowledge or experience. Come along, learn with us, share your ideas and help imagine what a more circular future for marine plastics could look like in our region.
This is an opportunity to move beyond simply cleaning up litter and start exploring the bigger questions:
💭 How do we prevent marine debris in the first place?
💭 What infrastructure is missing?
💭 What can be recycled locally?
💭 How can communities influence change?
💭 What might a marine plastics circular economy look like on the Shipwreck Coast?
If you've ever felt frustrated by the endless stream of plastic washing ashore, or inspired to be part of creating solutions, this course is for you.
