About this Event
The JDC Archives and Brandeis University Initiative on the Jews of the Americas invite you to a public lecture
Join us for a lecture exploring JDC’s current role in Latin America. Sergio Widder will discuss JDC’s recent history of rescue in Latin America and its partnerships with Jewish communities across the region to accomplish sustainability and renewal programs. The lecture will also examine the challenges and opportunities that emerge from recent studies.
Professor Jonathan Sarna will respond.
The lecture will be followed by a dessert reception.
Sergio Widder is JDC Regional Director for Latin America. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, he has been working with Jewish communities in Latin America for more than three decades. Before joining JDC, he was the Latin American Director of the Simon Wiesenthal Center. In his current position, Sergio leads the work of JDC in Latin America, responding to humanitarian needs when necessary and partnering with communities to strengthen Jewish life across Latin America.
Dr. Jonathan Sarna is University Professor and the Joseph H. & Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History at Brandeis University. He is also past president of the Association for Jewish Studies and Chief Historian of the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.
Jonathan Sarna is a JDC Board member and serves on JDC’s Archives Committee.
Dr. Sarna is the author or editor of more than 30 books on American Jewish history and life. His American Judaism: A History (Yale 2004), now published in a second edition, won the 2004 “Everett Jewish Book of the Year Award” from the Jewish Book Council. His most recent books are Coming to Terms with America (JPS, 2021) and (with Benjamin Shapell) Lincoln and the Jews: A History (St. Martin’s, 2015).
The lecture is made possible by the generous donations of Susan and Charles Knapp, David and Ruth Musher, and an anonymous donor.
