About this Event
Johnny Campbell
A Modern-Day Billy Bragg; - TradfolkThe album From Hull; Halifax; Hell (2020) took him to The Faroe Islands wherehe recorded a live album on the island of Nolsoy. Since musical instruments hadn'tarrived on the islands until the 19th century, this is perhaps the first time NorthernEnglish traditional song has been recorded on these islands. Nobody else seems to be doing what Campbell is doing right now, and his passion anddetermination deserve recognition - Jon WilksThis album earned him album of the week with Blues and Roots radioand reviews with British folk press:The spirit of the folk clubs in their heyday runs in his veins; Folking.comI defy anyone not to be galvanised by the total integrity of his exceptional renditionof (Ewan MacColls) Moving On Song; The Living TraditionA truly entertaining work. Lose yourself in the true folk experience - Fatea Magazinehttps://johnnycampbell.co.uk/Johnny Campbell released ‘Winter Hill Trespass’ to celebrate the anniversary of themass trespass by 10,000 local people to defend an ancient right of way across themoor, that took place on Sunday 6 September 1896. The event predates the Kindertrespass but is less well-known. The song is a narrative with some imagination thrown inand an extremely singable chorus. Johnny’s guitar is joined by the violin of MikeyKenney and the sound of the wind on the moor. It actually sounds cold. Will yo’ come o’ Sunday mornin’For a walk o’er Winter Hill?Ten thousand went last SundayBut there’s room for thousand still!Oh there moors are rare and bonnyAnd the heather’s sweet and fineAnd the roads across the hilltops –Are the people’s – yours and mine!
Tealeaf
Tealeaf arose as a project out of session culture and a community of people living on,restoring and sailing traditional boats in Penryn. It began by discovering and interpretingtraditional ballads that tied into the way communities and culture in Cornwall – wherethey are based – are changing. This led to writing new songs collaboratively that are a combination of original ideas andexperiences and re-contextualising themes from the folk tradition that have weaved theirway back into our day-to-day lives such as the housing crisis and the de-industrialisation of Cornwall.Ollie, Phylly and Tom use cello, bouzouki, harmonium, banjo and guitar, alongside theirvoices to build music full of rich harmony, warmth and dread.Tealeaf weaves together traditional ballads and contemporary narratives, born fromCornwall’s boat-dwelling community in Penryn. This unique trio crafts songs that bridgetheir maritime lifestyle with pressing modern issues, from housing crises to Cornwall’schanging industrial landscape.Through their unique combination of cello, bouzouki, harmonium, banjo, and guitar, theyreimagine traditional folk themes through a contemporary lens. Their collaborativesongwriting process brings together lived experience with historical perspective, creating something both timeless and urgently relevant.Expect an evening where rich harmonies meet stories of community and change. Withwarmth and occasional dread, Tealeaf creates music that speaks to both Cornwall’sheritage and its evolving present
