John Hall - Remembered in the Landscape Talk
KATE FOSTER IS A GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER OF SIR JOHN HALL AND ROSE, LADY HALL AND LIVES IN THE FAMILY HOME OF TERRACE STATION AT HORORATA IN CANTERBURY.
Kate is surrounded by archives, portraits and pleasurable reminders of those pioneer settlers. She is keeper of the family stories and co-founder with her late husband Richard of the Terrace Station Charitable Trust. In 2015 Kate was awarded the Rhodes Medal by the Canterbury History Foundation. This is given to a non-academic historian for their contribution to Canterbury history.
Her talk will follow the Heritage Festival theme of connections and building communities. She will touch on many elements of John’s life – local and national politics, involvement with his Hororata community, the church, and with his rural property, Rakaia Terrace Station. One of John’s passions was tree planting and Kate will talk about how this impacted on the landscape, and what remains today.
Kate will provide photos to illustrate her talk and is happy to answer questions.
A collaborative Heritage Festival event presented by the Canterbury Horticultural Society and Te Whare Waiutuutu Kate Sheppard House.
HERITAGE FESTIVAL
We are pleased to offer this event during the Christchurch Heritage Festival 2026, Friday 16 to Monday 26 October (Labour Day) 2026.
Connections - The theme this year developed from anniversaries relating to the expansion of infrastructure and communications in the city of Ōtautahi-Christchurch and the Waitaha-Canterbury region, the change and development brought about by wider connections.
The place we live in continues to change and the connections we make shape our future. Through sharing our stories, we better understand our environment, the landscape, the people and the place.
