On March 2 we will do two short sets of very familiar songs. Some New Orleans Trad (think Louis Armstrong) and some standard American Songbook things. Each of us will sing a few numbers.
John Capon started his career as a Bass Trombonist in Vancouver, BC in 1960. He played on CBC Radio and on TV, most notably Jazz Radio Canada as well as with the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, the CBC Vancouver Orchestra, the Fraser McPherson Orchestra, the Bobby Hales Orchestra, and for a variety of CBC shows under leader Dave Robbins. John relocated to Toronto in 1967 after achieving a Bachelor of Music Degree at the University of British Columbia. In Toronto, his busy bass trombone career picked up where it left off, with Capon becoming a frequent feature player in television commercials, film score recordings, as a member of The National Ballet Orchestra, and Phil Nimmons’ stellar Nimmons ‘n’ Nine Plus Six. In 1986, Capon moved with his wife and children to Gabriola, where he conducted the Malaspina Choir for 16 years and created the Gabriola Chamber Ensemble. During the last 30 years, he produced three CDs as a Jazz soloist.
Brad Shipley is a well-known Gabriola multi-instrumentalist who is known for his excellent musicianship on guitar, mandolin, and lap steel. He’s an in-demand side man around Vancouver Island and has performed with many top-notch area groups. He has been a featured musician at the Chemainus Theatre and many Island festivals for many years and enjoys teaching music to folks of all ages. Brad has a Bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from VIU and is currently the music director for Gabriola Chamber Ensemble.
Brian McMahon is known on Gabriola as a bass player and saxophonist. Brian taught K-12 music for 3 ½ decades, mostly in Vernon where he worked as part of the team that established the Vernon Jazz Club in 1999. Brian played in Kelowna’s Michael Garding Big Band which backed up visiting artists such as Dee Daniels, Roger Treece, Laila Biala, Campbell Ryga, Carol Wellsman, Brad Turner, and more.
