🎷 Joe Rosenberg Quartet • Live at Smalls
Global citizen, soprano saxophonist and composer Joe Rosenberg returns to Smalls with a quartet built around deep listening, strong individual voices and open-ended improvisation.
Originally from Boston, Joe studied with Joe Viola, Buddy Collette and John Carter, and received a Jazz Performance Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts in 1995. Over the years he has performed with musicians including Dewey Redman, Gary Foster, Junko Onishi, Mark Helias, Tom Rainey and Taylor Ho Bynum.
His long-running group Affinity became known for its adventurous approach to modern jazz, including recorded tributes to Eric Dolphy and Ornette Coleman, while the Affinity and Joe Rosenberg Group recordings established a substantial body of work under his own name. Since relocating to Asia in the mid-1990s, Joe has remained active across Hong Kong, Japan, China and the wider region. His soprano playing can move from lyrical and spacious to sharply angular, with improvisation and interaction always at the center of the music.
