Join us Friday, September 20, 2024, at 2:00 pm with author Roger Peach as he discusses his book, "Jockey Queen: Lillian Jenkinson Holder, Horse Racing’s Fearless Lady," a biography of a fearless farm girl turned race rider out of Nebraska was beginning her 47-year jockey career at venues beyond the reach of big-time track rules who spent much of her life and career living in southern Illinois.Roger Peach is a SIU journalism graduate and released “Jockey Queen,” on Feb. 20, 2024. Peach said “Jockey Queen: Lillian Jenkinson Holder, Horse Racing’s Fearless Lady” is the story of a young woman who defied the “sport of kings” unwritten rule that females could not be jockeys. “She literally fought for her place in the saddle against those ‘kings’ and was never allowed to compete at recognized, pari-mutuel racetracks in spite of superb professional skills,” Peach said.
According to Library Journal, Peach’s book tells the story of a woman jockey’s unwavering passion, talent and refusal to be limited by societal constraints. Drawing from interviews with Holder’s surviving relatives and fellow jockeys who competed against her, Peach captures her spirit as a fearless and determined rider who was unafraid to stand up to her male counterparts, Library Journal said.
This event is presented by the Herrin History Room and is free and open to the public.
