Alex Askew is a multi-instrumentalist currently in his final semester of his bachelor’s degree at JMI where he is specialising in upright bass. Alex began his venture in music at a young age, initially on guitar. He would later be taught singing and piano by renowned songwriter and vocalist Tyrone Noonan and is currently being taught upright bass under the guidance of respected bassist Andrew Shaw. Alex’s main influences and inspirations on the double bass are Ray Brown, Paul Chambers, Jimmy Blanton and Scott Lafaro. He also takes inspiration from the hard bop era of jazz and the composers from that time. Band:
