Description:
Discover one of Egypt's most cheerful folkloric styles: The Nubian Dance!
Part of the MENAT folkloric heritage (Middle-Eastern, North African, Turkiye), Nubian dance is a vibrant and expressive art form that celebrates the cultural identity and heritage of the Nubian people, who are indigenous to the region along the Nile River in southern Egypt and northern Sudan.
Nubia is a geographical area that played a significant role throughout the region’s history from ancient times.Nubia was home to some of Africa’s earliest kingdoms. Known for rich deposits of gold, Nubia was also the gateway through which luxury products like incense, ivory, and ebony traveled from their source in sub-Saharan Africa to the civilizations of Egypt and the Mediterranean.
As one of the North African dances, the Nubian dance is characterized by rhythmic movements to happy, upbeat music, colorful costumes, and a strong sense of community and celebration. Nubian dances are usually performed in groups as line dances, emphasizing unity and social cohesion. They often take place during festivals, weddings, and other communal celebrations.
In this comprehensive workshop, we will delve into the vibrant music and specific dance moves of the Nubian region. The focus will be on stepwork, few body moves, group formations, and interaction with fellow dancers. Most importantly, we will have a blast while learning! We will culminate our learning with a choreographed group performance to a traditional, joyous Nubian song.
For dancers of Raqs Sharki (belly dance), it’s essential to know about different kinds of music and dance stylesfrom countries of origin to properly characterize them stylistically in performance and to expand the movement vocabulary and body ability to accommodate a variety of moves.
This workshop is taught by A’isha, an accomplished belly dance artist, performer, teacher, and show producer in the Kansas City metro area. She stepped into her first belly dance class about 20 years ago, and it was love at first sight! Since then, A’isha has trained with numerous national and international teachers, attended workshops, and was a laureate of national and international competitions, most notably winning first place inthe AmCab category at the “Belly Dancer of the Universe Competition” in 2019! Among other local events, she produced the monthly show “1001 Arabian Nights” in Kansas City from 2012 to 2020. She has been teaching belly dance classes since 2015: weekly group classes, coaching individual students and occasionally teaching focused workshops in Kansas City.
