Going Up the River: the Mad, the Van Duzen, the main Eel, and the South Fork all offered vast groves of redwoods, striking small communities, and the prospect of winter floods. The combination was certain to ensure excitement. Here were: secluded Shively, where rowdy railroad workers came to party throughout the night; Blue Slide on the Mad, home to one of the last families of the now-forgotten Mawenok tribe; Strong’s Station, where drinking, dining, and the occasional shooting provided evening entertainment. We’ll see it all, going up the river.
