Comprehension is a rich, dynamic process — and whole books place unique demands on readers that short texts simply don't. Drawing on the Active View of Reading framework, Jennifer Serravallo unpacks what comprehension really requires and how to design instruction that builds deep, lasting understanding across reading and content areas like science and social studies.
Participants will leave with a clear, grade-adaptable framework for using assessment to form strategic small groups — and concrete moves to bring back to students the very next day.
In this workshop, we will:
Explore the cognitive factors that shape comprehension in whole book reading
Use assessment data to identify student needs and form targeted small groups around specific comprehension strategies
Plan and analyze small group lessons across multiple formats
Design comprehension instruction that transfers across content areas, including science and social studies
Build a responsive, grade-adaptable framework for readers in grades 1–8
Appropriate for classroom teachers, reading specialists, instructional coaches, and literacy leaders.
