About this Event

Underwing

When Jennifer Lane finally fell pregnant, she and her partner were overjoyed. But it wasn't an easy pregnancy, and her journey towards motherhood was, in the end, a story of loss.

In the wake of her traumatic grief and physical recovery, Jennifer - a practising green witch - was left questioning everything about her beliefs. Trust your intuition, they say. But what if the worst thing that could happen does?

As she grieved, Jennifer turned to the mysteries of our animal natures, witchcraft and women's fertility for understanding and comfort. This beautifully written account of finding solace in the natural world offers companionship through loss, and a sustaining path to joy and hope.

Jennifer Lane

Jennifer Lane is a green witch and nature writer with a background in wildlife communications. As a journalist she has written for Vogue, Dazed and the BBC, promoting the wider health benefits of nature, birdwatching and living in tune with the land. In 2018, she won a Northern Writers' Award. She is the author of The Wheel and The Witch's Survival Guide, as well as two novels for young adults. Jennifer is based near Manchester with her partner and a calico cat called Linnet.

Jennifer also co-hosts the Blackwell's Sabbat Sessions alongside Laura Derbyshire.

The Book of Beasts

The bear deities, Artio and Artaius, who'll rise from sleep; the salmon of wisdom who gifts understanding of the universe's past, present and future; the Lion Man carved 40,000 years ago. Join Elizabeth Sulis Kim as she travels across the globe and through time, from our deep past into the future, bringing together the animals which have captivated us for millennia.
Steeped in folklore, mythology, magic and religion, The Book of Beasts tells the story of our shapeshifting relationships with animals, from reverence to persecution, friendship to fear, awe to indifference. It asks us what we actually know about the creatures we share this world with - and offers us a different way of living together.
