Join us on Sunday, August 9th for an evening that feels unmistakably Jackalope Cult Cinema.
This month, we’re honored to partner up with Wyoming Humanities in presenting “Before Wyoming: The West in 1776”– a film that expands the story of 1776 beyond the East, revealing the overlooked history of the Northern Rockies and Great Plains. In this feature, we'll explore thriving Indigenous nations, early European influence, and the changing world of the West through historians, Native voices, artifacts, and the perspectives of young people today. We're grateful for the opportunity to showcase such a unique film thanks to Wyoming Humanities and the "By the People: Conversations Beyond 250" initiative.

For our second feature, we’ll be screening the cult classic Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999), one of the sharpest, funniest, and most delightfully twisted comedies to come out of the late ‘90s.
Set in the fiercely competitive world of small-town Minnesota beauty pageants, it’s packed with unforgettable performances, endlessly quotable one-liners, and enough dark humor to make you wonder how this movie ever got made. Fair warning: it is very much a product of its era, with some language and humor that reflects the late ‘90s, but beneath all of that is a brilliantly crafted satire that has earned every bit of its cult-classic status.
At Jackalope Cult Cinema, we love stories that spark conversations long after the credits roll. Sometimes that means discovering a new piece of Wyoming history. Sometimes it means laughing until your sides hurt at the wonderfully absurd. This month, you get both.

By the People: Conversations Beyond 250 is a series of community-driven programs created by humanities councils across the United States, its territories, and the District of Columbia in collaboration with local partners. Together, these programs explore 250 years of the nation's cultural life and imagine its shared future. The initiative was developed by the Federation of State Humanities Councils and the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage as a complement to the 2026 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
